I Kings 18:24Sefaria

The dramatic confrontation on Mount Carmel reaches its climax with a public test designed to definitively reveal the true God. The challenge is presented with complete fairness, granting the prophets of Baal the advantage of going first. This head start ensures that when they inevitably fail, they will not be able to blame the quality of their animal or the time of day. Their failure will only prove that Baal is powerless [מלבי״ם].

The outcome of the test rests on a divine response of fire descending from heaven to consume the sacrifice [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Given that the nation was suffering from a devastating three-year drought, a test of rain would seem much more logical. However, Elijah planned his challenge with careful foresight. He knew the false prophets recognized their absolute inability to produce rain and would never agree to such a test. Furthermore, the public was still deeply afraid of Elijah's earlier oath that had stopped the rains. Therefore, Elijah selected a test of fire, anticipating that the prophets of Baal would accept it because they believed they could cheat [נחל שורק, חומת אנך].

Their secret plan was to hide a man named Hiel inside the hollow space beneath their altar. He was supposed to ignite a fire from below, creating the illusion of a miraculous divine response. Ultimately, this deception failed when a snake bit Hiel, resulting in his death [נחל שורק, חומת אנך].

Beyond preventing physical trickery, Elijah designed the test to eliminate any possibility of witchcraft or demonic forces. The required sign was a specific, recognizable heavenly fire, which behaves entirely differently from ordinary flames or fires produced by impure forces. A true heavenly fire consumes the meat of the sacrifice first and only afterward catches onto the wood. Additionally, Elijah's specific instruction for the false prophets to call out in the name of their god was a calculated move to prevent them from using holy incantations. Holiness cannot function when paired with the mention of idolatry and impurity [אלשיך].

The gathered crowd responded with enthusiastic approval, viewing the proposed test as clear and decisive proof [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The people were genuinely conflicted and eager to finally uncover the truth [מלבי״ם]. Yet, while they agreed that the plan was sound, they refused to actively participate by calling out to Baal themselves. Instead, they stepped back and left the execution entirely to the false prophets, waiting to see which side would ultimately prove its righteousness [אלשיך].
