I Kings 18:15Sefaria

Following a moment of deep fear and hesitation from Obadiah, Elijah issues a severe oath to put his mind at ease. The primary approach among commentators is that Elijah's words are meant entirely to relieve Obadiah's anxiety, guaranteeing that he will not suddenly disappear. Swearing by the living God of Hosts, Elijah makes an absolute commitment to present himself face-to-face before Ahab that very day.

This firm promise sets the stage for a series of highly dramatic events. Reassured, Obadiah delivers the message to Ahab, who immediately goes out to meet the prophet. Their encounter quickly devolves into a fierce exchange of accusations. Ahab confronts Elijah, labeling him a troublemaker who brings ruin upon the Israelites. In response, Elijah turns the accusation back on the king, clarifying that Ahab and his father's household are the true source of the nation's troubles, as they have abandoned God's commandments to worship other gods.

The confrontation reaches its climax with a bold challenge. Elijah demands that the king gather all the Israelites at Mount Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table. The purpose of this massive assembly is to force a clear, public decision to prove once and for all which side is right [צאינה וראינה].
