שמואל א, פרק י״ח, פסוק י״ג

I Samuel 18:13Sefaria

וַיְסִרֵ֤הוּ שָׁאוּל֙ מֵֽעִמּ֔וֹ וַיְשִׂמֵ֥הוּ ל֖וֹ שַׂר־אָ֑לֶף וַיֵּצֵ֥א וַיָּבֹ֖א לִפְנֵ֥י הָעָֽם׃ {ס}

King Saul makes a deliberate decision to distance David from his inner circle. The constant presence of David in the royal palace has become too much for the king to bear [רד״ק]. Simply seeing David disrupts Saul's peace of mind, prompting him to remove the young warrior from his immediate surroundings [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To achieve this separation, Saul assigns David a new military role as a commander of a thousand men. Commentators differ on the true nature of this position. One perspective views it as a highly prestigious rank, suggesting David effectively becomes the deputy commander of the army [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, another approach understands this reassignment as a calculated demotion and a public humiliation. In this view, Saul removes David from his previous role as the head of the entire army specifically to strip him of central leadership [מלבי״ם].

Beneath this administrative change lies a darker motive. Saul hopes that by placing David in constant, active combat, the young commander will eventually be killed in battle [מצודת דוד]. However, the king's plan to minimize David's influence severely backfires. By consistently leading the troops in and out of military engagements, David steps into the role of the people's practical, everyday leader [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The nation grows so deeply attached to him that they refuse to take any action without his guidance. Ultimately, Saul's attempt to push David to the margins only solidifies his position as the undisputed leader of the masses [מלבי״ם].
