Saul perceives the women's lyrics as a severe blow to his status, as they credit the young warrior with defeating tens of thousands while attributing only thousands to the king [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When Saul speaks of what the women have given, he is not referring to physical wealth, but rather to the lavish praise and honor they assign in their song [מצודת ציון].

The primary approach among commentators views Saul's reaction as a profound existential fear for his position. He wonders what else remains for the young warrior to receive. By granting him such immense greatness in their song, the only thing he lacks is the actual title of king [רש"י, רד"ק, מצודת דוד]. With the majority of the nation already supporting and admiring him, the kingdom is essentially in his hands, and all that is left is for him to take it practically [מלבי"ם].
