I Samuel 18:6Sefaria

The journey home from the battlefield marks a dramatic turning point in the relationship between Saul and David. After a long campaign in the Valley of Elah, the soldiers finally make their way back to their land [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Saul heads toward his home in Gibeah, while David travels with the head of the Philistine, displaying it throughout the cities of Israel along their route [מלבי״ם]. In those days, it was an ancient custom to compose songs celebrating the bravery of warriors, both to publicize their deeds and to inspire the nation to acts of heroism [אברבנאל]. Yet, this victory celebration, originally intended as a display of honor, becomes the very catalyst that sparks the king's jealousy and ignites his relentless pursuit of David [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

As the army approaches, women come out to greet them with singing. The primary approach among commentators is that the women carried specific musical instruments [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, רד״ק], though others suggest the description simply refers to the women themselves dancing in celebration [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. A fascinating discussion arises regarding the exact nature of their accompaniment. Most agree that the women played an additional type of instrument, such as cymbals [רש״י], a three-stringed instrument [מצודת ציון, רד״ק], or a percussion triangle [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, a completely different perspective suggests that this detail does not refer to instruments at all, but rather to the wondrous and honorable words the women sang. According to this view, they wove lofty lyrics into their melodies that compared the warriors, almost as if prophesying that David's future greatness would surpass that of Saul [רלב״ג].

Despite the provocative comparison in their songs, the women came out exclusively to honor King Saul. At that time, it would have been unthinkable for anyone to elevate David above the king, as such an act would be seen as outright rebellion and a severe insult to the monarch in the presence of his servant [מלבי״ם]. Nevertheless, regardless of the women's innocent intentions, the actual lyrics of their song ignited a deep anger within Saul. From that day forward, the king began to view David with suspicion and hostility, realizing that God was granting David success in all his endeavors [אברבנאל].
