ישעיהו, פרק י״ז, פסוק א׳

Isaiah 17:1Sefaria

At the dawn of King Ahaz's reign, a military alliance was formed between the kings of Aram and Israel with the shared goal of attacking Jerusalem. In response to this plot, God declares that both kingdoms will suffer a shared destiny of destruction and exile at the hands of the Assyrian king. Although the impending doom encompasses the kingdom of Israel as well, the prophetic vision opens by directly targeting Damascus, the capital of Aram [רד״ק, שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This specific focus highlights that the king of Aram was the primary architect and driving force behind the campaign against Jerusalem, while the king of Israel merely followed his lead [אברבנאל].

The imminent downfall of Damascus is presented with a sense of gladness, serving as a direct punishment for the city's ambition to conquer Jerusalem [חומת אנך]. The judgment decreed upon Damascus is one of complete removal. The primary approach among commentators is that the capital will be stripped of its former glory and entirely erased from the ranks of significant cities, ceasing to be recognized as a city at all.

Once a bustling metropolis, Damascus is destined to become a deep, desolate mound of collapsed houses and shattered stones [רש״י, רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. This total physical collapse is emphasized by a subtle wordplay contrasting its former status as a vibrant city with its new reality as a heap of rubble [שד״ל]. The devastation will be so absolute that the area will become completely inaccessible [מלבי״ם]. Yet, the massive piles of ruins will be left visible for a time, standing as a striking monument. Passersby will gaze in astonishment, witnessing how such a vast and powerful center of civilization was reduced to an empty wasteland [חומת אנך].
