Isaiah 16:14Sefaria

וְעַתָּ֗ה דִּבֶּ֣ר יְהֹוָה֮ לֵאמֹר֒ בְּשָׁלֹ֤שׁ שָׁנִים֙ כִּשְׁנֵ֣י שָׂכִ֔יר וְנִקְלָה֙ כְּב֣וֹד מוֹאָ֔ב בְּכֹ֖ל הֶהָמ֣וֹן הָרָ֑ב וּשְׁאָ֥ר מְעַ֛ט מִזְעָ֖ר ל֥וֹא כַבִּֽיר׃ {פ}

A sweeping prophecy against Moab reaches its dramatic conclusion, shifting from vivid descriptions of future ruin to a strict, non-negotiable countdown. The nation's immense glory is destined to fade, replaced by an immediate and exact timeline for its downfall.

God sets this appointed time during the era of Hezekiah, revealing that Moab has exactly three years remaining before disaster strikes The precision of this timeframe is compared to the contract of a hired laborer. The primary approach among commentators is that just as a hired worker strictly counts his days and works not a moment longer than required, this three-year period is absolute and exact. However, others view this comparison through an emotional lens, suggesting that just as a laborer eagerly anticipates the end of his shift each day, the prophet joyfully awaits the downfall of Moab [אבן עזרא]. A different historical perspective links this specific duration to Moab's own past actions. Because the Moabites previously assisted the King of Assyria in a three-year siege of Samaria acting as unpaid hired laborers, they are now destined to be punished and conquered by that very same Assyrian army

When this judgment arrives, Moab's deep pride will be transformed into complete shame, humiliation, and disgrace The primary approach among commentators notes that this steep fall will happen despite the nation's massive population and vast wealth, as neither numbers nor money will offer any protection on the day of reckoning Alternatively, the humiliation will be directly tied to the enemy, meaning Moab will be utterly despised in the eyes of the massive Assyrian army that takes them captive [רש״י].

Out of an originally vast and powerful nation, only a tiny fraction will survive. The absolute minimum will remain, a detail emphasized to show the extreme reduction of their population This surviving remnant will be deeply diminished in several ways. Quantitatively, they will be a very small group Qualitatively, they will be entirely weak and stripped of all physical power Furthermore, they will be left without any great or important leaders among them [אבן עזרא]. Yet, despite the severity of this crushing blow, it does not represent a complete annihilation or a total exile from their land. Because a small trace of the nation remains, Moab is eventually able to slowly rebuild itself in the years that follow [שד״ל].
