וְלֹ֣א יִשְׁעֶ֔ה אֶל־הַֽמִּזְבְּח֖וֹת מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יָדָ֑יו וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשׂ֤וּ אֶצְבְּעֹתָיו֙ לֹ֣א יִרְאֶ֔ה וְהָאֲשֵׁרִ֖ים וְהָחַמָּנִֽים׃ {ס}

Following a period of deep crisis and despair, a profound spiritual awakening takes hold of the people. They will no longer cling to the false sources of security that once fueled their pride, choosing instead to place their complete faith and focus in God alone [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל].

As part of this transformation, the people will abandon the altars they crafted with their own hands. The primary approach among commentators is that these were structures built expressly for idol worship [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. However, another perspective suggests these were unauthorized altars intended for God, such as the golden calves situated in Bethel and Dan [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or private, illicit altars erected throughout Jerusalem. Although the Temple itself was built by human beings, it was constructed at God's command; therefore, only these invalid, unauthorized structures receive the derogatory label of being merely human handiwork [שד״ל].

The sheer absurdity of idolatry is highlighted by the fact that these objects were fashioned by human fingers. While some view this detail as poetic repetition [רד״ק], it also serves to heighten the disgrace of the act. A person who sculpts an idol directly with his own hands, without any intermediaries, knows perfectly well that his creation is entirely lifeless and devoid of substance [מלבי״ם].

This realization sparks a complete shift in consciousness, causing these idols to lose all significance until they are no longer given even a passing glance [רש״י]. This change affects two distinct groups within the nation. Those who completely denied God and worshipped statues will stop turning to their altars altogether. Meanwhile, those who maintained a belief in God but relied on idols as tangible intermediaries will cease even looking at them, finally understanding that God's providence is direct and requires no middleman [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, specific fixtures of pagan worship will vanish entirely. Sacred trees and groves, planted specifically for idolatry around altars, will be abandoned. These shaded areas were notorious sites for abominations and acts of prostitution [מצודת ציון, שד״ל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The focus here is specifically on the physical trees used in these rituals, rather than the pagan goddess associated with them [שד״ל]. Additionally, objects dedicated to sun worship will be discarded. Commentators offer various descriptions of these sun-related items, suggesting they might have been statues placed on rooftops [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], structures shaped like chariots for the sun [אבן עזרא], or dedicated monuments [שד״ל]. Although the exact shapes of these ancient cultic objects have been lost to history [שד״ל], their removal marks the permanent end of an era of misplaced faith.
