ישעיהו, פרק ל״א, פסוק ז׳

Isaiah 31:7Sefaria

A dramatic moment of awakening is destined to occur, a turning point where illusions shatter and people recognize the uselessness of relying on material power. When God reveals His might and miraculously strikes the Assyrian camp without any human intervention, the people will immediately reject the false gods they created [רד״ק, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Seeing the enemy defeated without human weapons will make it entirely clear that false gods are empty and that God alone holds true power. The ultimate proof of this reality will be undeniable: the surrounding Judean cities that held onto false gods were captured, while Jerusalem was saved purely through prayer and trust in God [רד״ק].

Because of this upcoming revelation, there is an urgent call to return to God before the miracle actually takes place. After the spectacular fall of Assyria, everyone will naturally discard their false gods out of sheer awe. However, returning to God only after witnessing such overwhelming proof holds far less value. The goal is for the people to return to God early and out of their own free choice [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the physical act of throwing away these false gods is not just a delayed reaction, but the very trigger that will directly cause the downfall of the Assyrian army [מלבי״ם].

The creation of these false gods carries a heavy burden of personal responsibility, pointing an accusing finger directly at the makers who crafted them with their own hands [אבן עזרא]. A tragic irony exists here, as human hands, originally given to help and sustain life, were misused to build a massive spiritual obstacle [אברבנאל]. The creation of these objects is viewed as the ultimate moral failure, representing the greatest possible offense [אבן עזרא], as if they were crafted from the very beginning with the sole intent to cause spiritual ruin [שד ל בשם רש״י]. Beyond a moral failure, this act is also understood as a literal disaster. The objects the people crafted with their own hands did not just represent a spiritual wrong, but actively brought physical ruin and destruction upon them [שד״ל].
