ירמיהו, פרק י״ד, פסוק כ׳

Jeremiah 14:20Sefaria

יָדַ֧עְנוּ יְהֹוָ֛ה רִשְׁעֵ֖נוּ עֲוֺ֣ן אֲבוֹתֵ֑ינוּ כִּ֥י חָטָ֖אנוּ לָֽךְ׃

A deeply honest confession is brought before God, as the people take full responsibility for their dire situation and accept the harshness of His judgment. The primary approach among commentators is that this recognition of guilt is not limited to the present moment. Instead, it tightly links the failures of the current generation with those of the past. The people openly admit that they are continuing the damaging ways of their ancestors and holding fast to their bad deeds. Because of this, they acknowledge that it is entirely just for God to punish them for the accumulated wrongs of both generations combined [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

In expressing this moral and religious breakdown, the confession outlines three distinct categories of wrongdoing. One perspective classifies these failures by their level of severity. The first category represents acts of clear, outright rebellion. The second refers to intentional offenses committed knowingly, while the third describes unintentional mistakes and careless errors [רד״ק].

Another approach understands these categories through their nature and their lasting impact across generations. In this view, the first category points to intentional crimes, usually committed between one person and another. The second category focuses specifically on the sins of the ancestors, representing a deep, twisted way of thinking and an actual denial of God. Because the previous generations planted such deep-rooted denial, their severe actions eventually became viewed as normal and completely acceptable by their children. Consequently, the final category describes the current generation committing these same wrongs unintentionally. They sin out of mere habit, completely unaware of the true severity of their actions [מלבי״ם].
