איוב, פרק כ״ב, פסוק י״ח

Job 22:18Sefaria

וְה֤וּא מִלֵּ֣א בָתֵּיהֶ֣ם ט֑וֹב וַעֲצַ֥ת רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים רָ֣חֲקָה מֶֽנִּי׃

The sight of wicked individuals enjoying wealth and success while actively rebelling against God presents a great challenge to faith. It raises difficult questions about how God governs the world, highlighting a sharp contrast between the blessings these individuals receive and their refusal to acknowledge the source of those blessings. God Himself provides this abundance to the wicked. Because they lack nothing, their denial of His involvement in the world makes no sense; they have absolutely no practical reason to reject His oversight [מצודת דוד].

Faced with this reality, the natural response is to keep a strict distance from the mindset and denial of the wicked [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This separation can be viewed as a firm moral boundary, reflecting a deep desire to stay completely away from their corrupt thoughts and hoping never to share their fate [רמב״ן, אלשיך, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On the other hand, this distance can be understood as a complete inability to relate to their thinking. The sheer foolishness of denying God after receiving such tremendous good from Him is simply impossible for a faithful person to comprehend [מצודת דוד].

On a deeper level, this distance does not refer to the thoughts of the sinners at all, but rather to the hidden plan of God [מלבי״ם]. The success of the wicked naturally triggers painful questions about the apparent lack of justice in the world, leading some to claim that God does not oversee human affairs. The true reason behind this reality remains a secret, far beyond human grasp. Yet, this confusing dynamic is intentionally set by God to test the righteous. It checks whether they will continue to serve Him out of pure love and faith, even when the world order seems broken. By standing firm through this trial, those whose righteousness is visible on the outside and whose inner purity dwells in their hearts prove the absolute strength of their faith.
