איוב, פרק כ״ב, פסוק כ״ח

Job 22:28Sefaria

וְֽתִגְזַר־אֹ֭מֶר וְיָ֣קׇם־לָ֑ךְ וְעַל־דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ נָ֣גַהּ אֽוֹר׃

A person who reaches a profound closeness with God gains an extraordinary spiritual power, allowing their personal decisions to shape material reality. When such an individual makes a firm decision, God steps in to execute it, bringing their will to life [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This goes far beyond everyday success. Some commentators understand this as a promise of actual mastery over the natural world. When a righteous person issues a decree, all of creation submits to their word. History provides examples of individuals who altered the laws of nature through this very power, such as Joshua stopping the sun at Gibeon, Elijah halting the rain, and Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa controlling the weather and lighting vinegar as if it were oil [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

Along with this ability to shape reality comes a promise of continuous illumination. The primary approach among commentators is that this light represents a constant glow of success that accompanies the person wherever they turn.

Beyond mere material success, there are deeper spiritual layers to this illumination. It can signify a personal elevation, where physical and everyday aspects of life that were previously left in the dark are refined and brightened by the light of the soul [מלבי״ם]. However, possessing such extraordinary power might raise a natural concern. A person could fear that experiencing these miracles and successes will use up their spiritual merits. To counter this, a guarantee is given: even though God fulfills their decrees through miraculous means, their spiritual standing remains completely untouched. The light generated by their good deeds will continue to shine on their path perfectly, without any reduction [אלשיך].
