Job 22:30Sefaria

יְמַלֵּ֥ט אִֽי־נָקִ֑י וְ֝נִמְלַ֗ט בְּבֹ֣ר כַּפֶּֽיךָ׃ {פ}

At the height of his speech to Job, Eliphaz presents an uplifting vision of repentance and its profound impact. Although his earlier words were harsh, he concludes with a message of hope, emphasizing that human beings hold the power of choice. Through genuine repentance, a person does not merely secure their own survival; they become a source of blessing and rescue for the world around them.

The primary approach among commentators views this promise as a testament to the far-reaching power of a righteous person's pure actions [מצודת ציון]. If Job returns to God, his spiritual merit will grow so immense that God will spare even those who are guilty. In this view, the sheer purity of Job's deeds will serve as a shield, rescuing sinners who are entirely lacking in innocence [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The guilty are saved simply because of the pure actions of the righteous [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רמב״ן בשם התרגום]. Another perspective adds a layer of empathy to this rescue, suggesting that the righteous person's merit specifically answers the painful groans of those suffering in sorrow [רש״י].

Alternatively, the scale of this salvation can be understood in a much broader geographic sense. A truly pure individual possesses the power to save an entire settlement or island facing severe danger and deserving of harsh punishment [רלב״ג]. Through Job's complete repentance and flawless actions, an entire region can be cleansed and spared [רמב״ן]. This highlights an extraordinary level of spiritual greatness achieved after immense suffering. While Abraham could not save the city of Sodom without a minimum of ten righteous individuals, Job is promised a spiritual rank so high that he alone could save an entire island solely through the purity of his deeds [אלשיך].

Taking a completely different, more internal direction, the focus shifts from saving others to purifying the human soul. In this light, the concept of rescue is actually about expelling what is harmful. The impurity represents the negative traits, moral flaws, and corrupt thoughts buried within a person. The message is deeply personal: if individuals refine and cleanse their actions, they will successfully cast out all of their internal spiritual waste, achieving total inner purity [מלבי״ם].
