איוב, פרק כ״ב, פסוק ג׳

Job 22:3Sefaria

הַחֵ֣פֶץ לְ֭שַׁדַּי כִּ֣י תִצְדָּ֑ק וְאִם־בֶּ֝֗צַע כִּֽי־תַתֵּ֥ם דְּרָכֶֽיךָ׃

A profound theological question lies at the heart of human existence: does personal virtue actually contribute anything to the Creator? The primary approach among commentators views this as a rhetorical challenge regarding whether God gains any profit or pleasure from human righteousness. Ultimately, God does not benefit from a person's good deeds, nor is He harmed by their wrongdoings. He desires honesty and upright behavior purely for the benefit of the people who practice them [רמב״ן]. Because there is no relationship of dependency between God and humanity, a righteous person adds nothing to God's perfection, and God owes no favor or gratitude in return for good behavior [תקות אנוש, אלשיך].

This challenge also serves as a sharp critique of self-justification. God does not want a person to argue with Him in an attempt to prove their complete innocence, simply because it is impossible for any human being to be entirely free of sin [רש״י, תקות אנוש].

The nature of this righteousness can be divided into distinct categories of spiritual growth. It involves both internal purity through thought and study, as well as the practical application of good deeds in daily life [חומת אנך]. Furthermore, it distinguishes between basic moral compliance and a higher standard where an individual goes above and beyond the strict requirements of the law [אלשיך].

A contrasting viewpoint shifts the focus entirely away from what God gains and instead examines human motivation. The core issue becomes whether God desires righteousness when it is driven by the pursuit of a reward. If a person acts justly only to secure personal profit, God finds no value in their actions. In such a case, the individual is essentially serving their own self-interest rather than their Creator [מלבי״ם].
