איוב, פרק ל״ז, פסוק ה׳

Job 37:5Sefaria

יַרְעֵ֤ם אֵ֣ל בְּ֭קוֹלוֹ נִפְלָא֑וֹת עֹשֶׂ֥ה גְ֝דֹל֗וֹת וְלֹ֣א נֵדָֽע׃

The immense and miraculous power of God stands in sharp contrast to the limits of human understanding. Thunder serves as a powerful metaphor for the Creator's greatness, highlighting how little we truly grasp of His hidden ways. The primary approach among commentators is that God thunders His voice in a miraculous manner [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This serves as a logical lesson: if people are frightened by the sound of natural thunder and cannot fully understand its nature, they certainly cannot comprehend God's supernatural voice. This voice represents His rule over the universe, which operates entirely above the laws of nature [מלבי״ם, תקות אנוש].

A profound gap exists between what is revealed to humanity and what remains hidden. While we can hear and recognize the everyday wonders of thunder, God constantly performs other massive acts that remain completely unknown to us [מצודת דוד]. This lack of knowledge means we either cannot understand the quality and method of how these actions are done [תקות אנוש], or we are simply blind to the great events God brings about at every moment [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Another perspective connects this concept to the events at Mount Sinai and the nature of hidden miracles. When the Israelites heard God's powerful voice, they were able to survive only because of His divine kindness. This kindness restrained the sheer force of the sound so it would not destroy the world. The wonder of this event was that the voice split into seventy languages and was perfectly adjusted to the individual strength of every single person, allowing both the strong and the weak to endure it. Yet, no one realized the experience was customized specifically for them. In the same way, God performs countless miracles for every person every single day, yet people remain completely unaware of the miracles happening in their own lives [אלשיך].
