Job 37:22Sefaria

A brilliant image of golden light bursting from the north serves as a powerful metaphor for God's revelation, His hidden ways, and the deeper meaning behind human suffering. The primary approach among commentators is that this imagery captures a dramatic shift in the weather. A strong north wind blows in, scattering heavy rain clouds to reveal brilliant, golden sunlight shining from a clear sky Seeing the sun emerge from the dark clouds exposes God's glory, naturally inspiring people to rejoice and sing His praises [אבן עזרא]. This natural event also offers a humbling lesson. If human eyes cannot bear to stare directly into the bright, golden glow of the physical sky, they certainly cannot comprehend the great and terrifying majesty that constantly surrounds God [רמב״ן, רש״י].

Beyond the physical weather, the imagery acts as a profound philosophical lesson. The concept of the north does not just point to a geographic direction, but hints at things that are buried and concealed, much like physical gold must be mined from deep underground Just as gold is hidden in the earth and the sun is masked by clouds, God's ways, His wisdom, and His reasons for giving reward and punishment remain completely out of reach for the human mind Investigating these divine truths requires a mind as pure and refined as gold itself. Yet, because God is so awesome, any attempt to understand Him must be done with deep respect and caution, fearing that inadequate human words might diminish His greatness Ultimately, this deliberate hiding of God's presence is what makes human free will possible, a reality that eventually highlights His profound wisdom and glory [מלבי״ם].

On a deeply personal level, this imagery offers great comfort to anyone enduring pain. The north represents the origin of harsh storms, strict justice, and anger [שטיינזלץ, אלשיך]. The encouraging message is that precisely out of life's emotional storms and periods of harsh judgment, a golden light of kindness will eventually break through [שטיינזלץ]. Hardships serve to cleanse and refine a person. For those who faithfully prepare themselves to follow God's commandments, a wonderful reward of spiritual gold is kept safely hidden away for the end of their journey [רש״י, אלשיך]. Conversely, when wicked people seem to enjoy physical wealth, this too comes from the north. For them, it originates from a place of strict justice that will eventually lead to their downfall, an outcome that brings gratitude to the righteous and awesome God [אלשיך].
