איוב, פרק ל״ז, פסוק כ״ד

Job 37:24Sefaria

לָ֭כֵן יְרֵא֣וּהוּ אֲנָשִׁ֑ים לֹֽא־יִ֝רְאֶ֗ה כׇּל־חַכְמֵי־לֵֽב׃ {פ}

Elihu’s concluding thoughts to Job highlight the vast gap between God’s supreme rule and the limits of human understanding. Recognizing God's immense power, awesome deeds, and perfect justice naturally leads people to fear Him and avoid disobeying His will [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד, תקות אנוש].

When it comes to human intellect, the primary approach among commentators is that God does not value the wisdom of people. Those who consider themselves wise are viewed as fools before Him, as their intellect is entirely insignificant [רש״י, רמב״ן, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. Because God manages a mysterious and wondrous world, He does not feel the need to justify His decisions to the human mind [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He also shows no favoritism in judgment, treating even the most intelligent and important individuals equally [מצודת דוד]. In fact, the very act of hiding His ways from human understanding is what inspires true awe and creates the necessary space for free will [מלבי״ם].

Conversely, another perspective suggests that it is not God who overlooks human wisdom, but rather that human wisdom is completely blind to God. According to this view, even the wisest individuals are simply unable to grasp or understand God's true nature and the hidden secrets of how He guides the world [אבן עזרא בשם רוב המפרשים, תקות אנוש].

Looking at the relationship between God and humanity from a different angle, this dynamic actually shapes how people choose to serve God. If He were to display clear and immediate reward and punishment in the world, people would serve Him purely out of fear. However, God desires to be served out of love and pure faith, which is the true path of the wise [אלשיך].

Finally, a more personal interpretation views these ideas as a direct rebuke to Job. Because Job used to instill unnecessary fear in the people of his time, he was punished by not living to see the survival of his own wise sons [רש״י].
