Job 5:9Sefaria

The universe operates through a complex balance of steady natural laws and miraculous interventions, all guided by an intelligence far beyond human reach. Recognizing this immense, unlimited power allows a person to place complete trust and reliance on God [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Divine management of the world is divided into two distinct methods. The first involves the fixed, regular laws of nature established at the dawn of creation. While those who study nature often believe they can fully decode these systems, the natural order is fundamentally beyond complete human grasp The second method involves miracles, both open and hidden, that break the boundaries of nature. Although miracles are typically thought of as rare and unusual, God actually performs an endless, continuous stream of hidden miracles Furthermore, even when a person witnesses what appears to be a single miraculous event, they lack the ability to fully understand it. What looks like one wonder is, in reality, constructed from countless hidden miracles working together [חומת אנך].

This continuous divine management does not operate in a vacuum; it serves to guide and judge humanity. God does not leave the world to run blindly according to nature or the stars. Instead, He maintains absolute control over these systems, altering them at will to bring benefit or punishment The most obvious proof of this active, daily involvement is rainfall. Unlike the sun and the moon, which follow permanent and predictable paths, rain is given or withheld in direct response to human behavior, serving as constant evidence of God's direct involvement in the physical world [רמב״ן]. The depth of His actions is further revealed by His ability to bring about opposites at the exact same time. Within a single act of strict judgment, He can seamlessly weave hidden threads of mercy and kindness [אלשיך].

Understanding this dynamic reveals the incredible power that humans hold. Precisely because a person is a physical being engaged in a constant struggle with worldly desires, their choice to turn to God in prayer carries immense weight. Human prayer has the capacity to move God to perform massive, nature-altering acts. Through this, a person reaches a level even higher than the spiritual angels, as their words inspire the Creator to act in the world in ways that are completely without limit [אלשיך].
