איוב, פרק ה׳, פסוק ט״ו

Job 5:15Sefaria

וַיֹּ֣שַׁע מֵ֭חֶרֶב מִפִּיהֶ֑ם וּמִיַּ֖ד חָזָ֣ק אֶבְיֽוֹן׃

God actively intervenes in the world to disrupt the schemes of the powerful and the cunning, ensuring the very survival of humanity. Without His constant oversight, human society would resemble the fish of the sea, where the large endlessly swallow the small and tyrants completely wipe out the weak [מלבי״ם]. While the identity of those being rescued is initially unstated, the primary approach among commentators is that the needy mentioned at the conclusion of the thought are the focus throughout. God steps in to save the destitute, the lowly, and the stumbling [רש״י, רלב״ג].

The nature of the threat they face is complex and understood in several ways. One perspective views the danger as a metaphor for destructive speech, where the weapon is actually the mouth of the wicked. God protects the vulnerable from the slander of their tongue [רמב״ן, אלשיך], as the ruin caused by malicious words is often more devastating than physical violence [תקות אנוש]. In a twist of justice, God sometimes uses the very words of the wicked to bring about salvation. When the corrupt loudly boast about their schemes, the intended victim hears of the plot and escapes [רלב״ג]. Another approach envisions the wicked as beasts of prey. In this light, God rescues the helpless from the predatory jaws of those who plot to swallow them alive [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, the danger can be seen as twofold, meaning God delivers the needy from actual physical weapons as well as from the vicious mouths of their attackers [רמב״ן, מלבי״ם].

Beyond these general themes, certain historical moments capture this dynamic. During times of severe drought, God protects the poor from enemy attacks, rescuing them from the starvation and siege brought on by those trying to defeat them through hunger [אבן עזרא]. Another specific instance is the plague of darkness during the Exodus from Egypt. God shielded the Israelites from the slander of the Egyptians, rescuing the helpless from their powerful oppressors while the Israelites searched through Egyptian homes under the cover of the dark [אלשיך].

Ultimately, God delivers the powerless from the grip of anyone stronger who seeks to cause them harm, whether that threat comes through brute force, destructive words, or deadly weapons [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
