איוב, פרק ה׳, פסוק כ״ד

Job 5:24Sefaria

A promise of absolute security, inner peace, and direct divine providence over both home and property serves as the ultimate comfort offered to Job. This represents a state of double perfection, blessing a person with harmony in family life and stability in material possessions. It brings a profound sense of security, allowing a person to embark on a journey and remain completely calm, knowing with absolute certainty that his household is safe and no harm will occur in his absence. Beyond mere physical safety, this is an assurance of true mental tranquility. Unlike in the past, when great wealth brought constant worry over scattered assets, a person will now be able to rejoice in his lot without anxiety, which is the very definition of true wealth [אלשיך].

This divine protection covers every aspect of a person's estate. A clear distinction is drawn between the inner home, which houses the family, and the outer habitation, which includes the surrounding assets, properties, and pastures [מלבי״ם]. When a person returns from travels to inspect these possessions, he will find his estate exactly as he imagined it, completely whole and unharmed [אבן עזרא].

The assurance that nothing will go wrong during this inspection is understood in several ways. The primary approach among commentators is that this does not refer to a moral failure, but rather to a physical lack or loss, much like a slinger missing a target [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. When surveying the estate, not a single item will be missing. Property will not be lost or fall into the hands of strangers [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ], and the flocks will multiply successfully [תקוות אנוש]. This absolute perfection in livelihood is not a matter of luck, but stems directly from God's personal supervision [מלבי״ם].

Conversely, other perspectives view this assurance through a moral and spiritual lens. It serves as a guarantee that the individual will not face punishment and that no iniquity will befall him [רמב״ן]. It also represents an educational correction. In the past, Job failed to properly supervise his household, but now he is promised the ability to watch over his children and actively keep them from wrongdoing [רלב״ג]. Finally, this spiritual perfection extends to family purity and personal character. While former wealth may have led to pride and improper thoughts, this new state is built on humble submission. Family life will be conducted purely for the sake of heaven, free from sin, leading to a generation of decent and upright children [אלשיך].
