איוב, פרק ה׳, פסוק כ״א

Job 5:21Sefaria

בְּשׁ֣וֹט לָ֭שׁוֹן תֵּחָבֵ֑א וְֽלֹא־תִירָ֥א מִ֝שֹּׁ֗ד כִּ֣י יָבֽוֹא׃

During times of social or physical upheaval, God's providence serves as a secure shelter against approaching dangers. One of the most severe threats a person can face is the unseen, destructive force of harmful speech. When turmoil strikes, divine protection acts as a shield, ensuring that an individual is kept safe from the ruin that words can inflict.

The primary approach among commentators is that this danger refers to gossip and slander. Hurtful words can act in two ways: they either roam endlessly, spreading rumors back and forth, or they strike sharply like a physical whip [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. When malicious talk multiplies and wanders through the world, sparking bitter conflicts, God intervenes by hiding the innocent person. He conceals them so their name is not dragged into the negativity, thereby sparing them from the devastation that inevitably follows such gossip [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, שטיינזלץ].

Beyond ordinary gossip, this harmful speech can take other forms. Rather than the talk of individuals, it might represent the language of a foreign nation. In this scenario, when an invading army roams the land, the protected person will be granted a safe haven [אבן עזרא]. On a spiritual level, the threat can also be understood as the accusing words of Satan, from which God provides divine concealment [רש״י].

Because of this divine shelter, a person does not need to fear approaching destruction. Interestingly, the very slander that seems harmful might actually be the mechanism of rescue. A person could suffer from a false accusation that leads to their arrest by the authorities. While this appears to be a misfortune, it is in fact a hidden blessing. The confinement of prison serves to hide them, ultimately saving their life from a much larger ruin and robbery that is destined to strike the city [מלבי״ם].

From a historical perspective, this dynamic of seeking shelter from destruction echoes the events in ancient Egypt during the plague of hail. At that time, those who heeded the warning rushed to hide their servants and livestock indoors. However, as a measure-for-measure punishment for their role in the destruction of the Israelites, the ruin reached them regardless, proving that without true divine protection, there is no escape from impending disaster [אלשיך].
