איוב, פרק ה׳, פסוק י״ג

Job 5:13Sefaria

לֹכֵ֣ד חֲכָמִ֣ים בְּעׇרְמָ֑ם וַעֲצַ֖ת נִפְתָּלִ֣ים נִמְהָֽרָה׃

God's providence operates in the world with profound irony, not merely stopping the plots of clever individuals, but actively using their own schemes to bring about their downfall. When people rely on cunning and manipulation to harm others, their intelligence offers them no advantage if their goals conflict with God's will [תקות אנוש]. Instead of simply blocking their efforts, God catches these schemers in the very nets they wove, causing them to fall into the traps they carefully dug for someone else [מצודת דוד].

Taking this a step further, God does not just cancel a malicious plan; He orchestrates events so that the exact tools intended for harm become the direct cause of the opposite outcome. A clear example of this dynamic is the sale of Joseph. His brothers plotted to sell him as a slave specifically to prevent him from achieving greatness. However, God took that very act of betrayal and transformed it into the precise mechanism that led to Joseph's ultimate success and leadership over them [מלבי״ם].

This divine response is especially true for stubborn, sophisticated individuals who constantly seek out twisted, indirect methods to trap others and get what they want [מצודת ציון, רלב״ג, שטיינזלץ, רמב״ן]. The strategies of such people ultimately become rash and reckless. The primary approach among commentators is that their plotting turns into complete foolishness; any plan rooted in such scheming is doomed to fall apart, as God reduces their deep, complex strategies to utter nonsense [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רלב״ג, שטיינזלץ, רמב״ן].

Other perspectives suggest that the outcome of these twisted plans involves actual speed, though for different reasons. One view explains that the plot unfolds rapidly because it ultimately strikes the person who planned it. Since the schemer is closest to his own trap, the harm does not have to travel far, returning to him instantly like a boomerang [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective argues that God Himself accelerates the evil plan rather than destroying it, because it perfectly serves His larger design. Just as He allowed the quick sale of Joseph to ensure his future rise to power, God speeds up the schemes of the wicked to fulfill His ultimate purpose [מלבי״ם].
