איוב, פרק ט׳, פסוק ו׳

Job 9:6Sefaria

הַמַּרְגִּ֣יז אֶ֭רֶץ מִמְּקוֹמָ֑הּ וְ֝עַמּוּדֶ֗יהָ יִתְפַּלָּצֽוּן׃

God's immense power is vividly revealed through massive natural forces that shatter the stability of the familiar world. When the very foundations of the earth tremble, it exposes human insignificance and highlights God's direct oversight of reality. The way this violent shaking occurs is understood in different ways. It can be seen as an immediate, direct action where God simply looks at the earth, causing it to quake [רש״י]. Alternatively, it operates through a guided natural process, where powerful winds become trapped deep underground. Unable to escape, these winds violently rock the earth's surface and its lowest foundations [מצודת דוד, תקות אנוש].

The reason behind such a terrifying event is debated. One approach views the shaking as a stark lesson that no one, not even the strongest among us, has a safe place to hide from God [רמב״ן]. Conversely, another perspective argues that this is not meant as a punishment for the wicked, but rather as a pure, awe-inspiring display of divine and natural power [תקות אנוש].

Looking at this from a broader cosmic viewpoint, even if God were to shake the earth so violently that it returned to a state of total chaos, it would not be an act of injustice. The universe is vast and filled with countless worlds. In the grand scheme of creation, the earth is just a tiny speck, and its loss would be comparable to losing just one individual from an entire species [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, the shifting of the earth serves as clear proof against astrology. Based on the astronomical understanding that the earth is held firmly in the center of the universe by surrounding celestial spheres, a sudden movement cannot be the result of a normal astrological cycle. Instead, it is undeniable evidence of God's direct intervention, proving He does not leave the world to the control of the stars. Despite this, naturalists and astrologers often misinterpret earthquakes as political omens predicting the fall of kings, missing the true message that these events are divine warnings urging humanity to repent [אלשיך].

On a spiritual level, the pillars that hold up the earth symbolize the righteous individuals who sustain the world. When God shakes the earth, it is actually these righteous people who tremble in deep reverence. Tragically, the wicked remain completely indifferent to the shock, ignoring the opportunity to change their ways [אלשיך].
