Attempting to confront God is fundamentally pointless, as human beings possess no advantage against divine perfection in either the mental or physical realm. The primary approach among commentators is that God Himself is the ultimate possessor of both wisdom and strength. He is wiser than any person, knowing exactly how to argue and win any dispute [רש״י, רמב״ן]. At the same time, He possesses absolute might and the complete ability to punish [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. In biblical thought, the heart serves as the center of all faculties and the dwelling place of wisdom [רמב״ן]. Because God holds this supreme intelligence and power, the wise cannot rely on their intellect to escape judgment, nor can the mighty depend on their physical strength to save themselves, as God completely surpasses human limits in both areas [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד].
Given this absolute superiority, it is impossible for anyone to stubbornly stand against God and emerge unharmed. Those who harden their hearts [רש״י, אבן עזרא], speak harsh words, or refuse to yield [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם] never remain intact or at peace [רש״י, אבן עזרא, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. History proves that no one has ever challenged God and walked away without injury. The ultimate example is Pharaoh, who hardened his heart against God and was ultimately left broken and lacking [רש״י].
Furthermore, a confrontation with God does not even require spoken words. Because God is infinitely wise and understands the deepest secrets of the human heart, He is fully aware of any internal resentment or sinful thoughts a person might secretly hold. He has the power to hold a person accountable instantly for their mere thoughts. Therefore, if a person cannot escape the consequences of a silent internal rebellion, it is absolutely certain they cannot emerge safely from an open confrontation where they hurl harsh accusations against Him [אלשיך].
In contrast to the majority view, an alternative approach suggests that the qualities of being wise and mighty refer to the human being rather than God. According to this perspective, even if a person is exceptionally intelligent and strong enough to formulate powerful arguments challenging how God runs the world, they will never find true peace. They will not emerge from this intense questioning feeling resolved, calm, or completely free of doubt [תקות אנוש].
