איוב, פרק ט׳, פסוק ג׳

Job 9:3Sefaria

אִם־יַ֭חְפֹּץ לָרִ֣יב עִמּ֑וֹ לֹֽא־יַ֝עֲנֶ֗נּוּ אַחַ֥ת מִנִּי־אָֽלֶף׃

The immense gap between a physical human being and the Creator makes any attempt at a legal or theological debate entirely impossible. When an individual seeks to argue with God [רש״י], the primary approach among commentators is that even a righteous person who wishes to complain about being deprived of a rightful reward will find no success. God will not answer even one out of a thousand of those questions or claims [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This divine silence creates a fundamental difficulty. Because God does not reply, a person has absolutely no way to justify himself or use his wisdom to win the argument [מלבי״ם].

This inability to argue stems from an inherent contradiction in the human condition. On one hand, people are material creatures prone to failure, seemingly so insignificant that God does not even bother to answer their claims. On the other hand, despite this insignificance, God holds them to a strict standard and punishes their sins. This reality leaves a person feeling entirely helpless, lacking any ability to confront the Creator [אלשיך].

A different perspective views God's lack of response not as a refusal to engage in a verbal debate, but as a delay in practical action within the world. According to this view, God does not rush to react to human behavior. He will not immediately repay a person with a reward for a good deed or a punishment for a bad one, withholding immediate consequences even once in a thousand opportunities [תקות אנוש].
