יהושע, פרק ט״ו, פסוק כ״ה

Joshua 15:25Sefaria

וְחָצ֤וֹר ׀ חֲדַתָּה֙ וּקְרִיּ֔וֹת חֶצְר֖וֹן הִ֥יא חָצֽוֹר׃

The division of the Promised Land outlines the specific territories assigned to the tribes of Israel, carefully detailing the cities within the borders of Judah. As these locations are recorded, certain names can be understood either as independent towns or as combined titles.

There is a difference of opinion regarding the exact number of towns identified in this area. One perspective views the record as listing four entirely separate cities: Hazor, Hadattah, Kerioth, and Hezron [מצודת דוד]. A different approach understands the first two names as a single location meaning New Hazor. This title was given to distinguish the newly established town from an older, existing city that shared the same name [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The geographical record also clarifies that the city of Hezron is simply another name for a place called Hazor. This specific location was already noted earlier when the broader borders of Judah were first outlined [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To prevent confusion among similarly named places, it is important to recognize that this Hezron-Hazor stands completely on its own. It is a distinct location, separate from the Hazor mentioned just prior, and it is also completely different from another city named Hazor that was recorded slightly earlier in the region's description [מצודת דוד].
