יהושע, פרק ט״ו, פסוק י״ד

Joshua 15:14Sefaria

Taking possession of the Promised Land required confronting some of its most powerful and terrifying inhabitants. For Caleb, claiming his personal inheritance meant facing three specific giants, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, who were the direct offspring of giants [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He successfully drove them out of his territory, but this was not a standard military victory. Instead, it was the direct result of accumulated spiritual merit.

Caleb's triumph was rooted in his own personal righteousness, a special blessing he received from Joshua, and the enduring merit of the nation's forefathers. Years earlier, during his mission as a spy, Caleb had specifically traveled to Hebron to pray at the resting place of the forefathers, drawing spiritual strength for this very location. Furthermore, the victory was anchored in a promise God made, assuring Joshua that there was no need to fear these giants [חומת אנך].

There are differing perspectives regarding exactly when this monumental conquest took place. One approach suggests that Caleb only drove out the giants after Joshua passed away, as Hebron had not been completely conquered during Joshua's lifetime. According to this view, the event is recorded here out of chronological order simply because the current narrative focuses on the broader division of the land [רש״י]. Conversely, another perspective maintains that Caleb achieved this victory while Joshua was still alive. In this view, a later account of the giants' expulsion found in the Book of Judges is simply a repetition of the events described here [מלבי״ם].
