יהושע, פרק ט״ו, פסוק ט״ו

Joshua 15:15Sefaria

Following the successful capture of Hebron, the military campaign presses forward to a neighboring city possessing a dual identity, one that carries both geographic and spiritual significance. Caleb advances to fight the inhabitants of Debir, located just northwest of Hebron [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There is an immediate urgency to take this city. Caleb needs to secure the surrounding region and eliminate any remaining enemy presence that might threaten the newly conquered Hebron [אברבנאל].

Historically known as Kirjath-sepher, the city's new name, Debir, shares a linguistic bond with its past, as the Persian word for "book" is "debir" [רד״ק]. While the primary account focuses on the physical conquest of the land [אברבנאל], ancient tradition uncovers a deep symbolic layer within the name Kirjath-sepher. It represents the specific Torah laws that the Israelites forgot during their period of mourning following the death of Moses. These forgotten laws are ultimately recovered by Othniel the son of Kenaz, who restores them through his rigorous analytical deduction and dedicated study [רש״י, אברבנאל, חומת אנך].

In this narrative, the physical capture of the city and the spiritual restoration of the lost laws become deeply intertwined. Caleb seeks to offer his daughter in marriage to the man capable of conquering the city and recovering the forgotten Torah. This aspiration highlights a profound connection between the pursuit of Torah study and the establishment of a family home. By marrying his daughter to the scholar who revives these laws, Caleb brings pleasure to God. This act embodies the belief that a man without a wife is also without Torah, showing that true spiritual perfection is reached only when the two are united [חומת אנך].
