The shared inheritance of Joseph’s descendants was divided to establish the internal borders between the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, as well as their external borders with neighboring tribes. Within their broad strip of land, the territory was split into two main sections. The tribe of Ephraim received the southern portion, positioning them between the land of Judah and the rest of the tribes, while the tribe of Manasseh was granted the northern area [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. This dividing line between the two tribes stretched westward to the coast, with the Kanah Brook serving as the specific marker separating their lands [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

On the western edge of the territory, the Mediterranean Sea formed a natural boundary. While the formal boundary description assigns this coastline specifically to Manasseh [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], the sea practically functioned as the shared western border for both tribes [מלבי״ם]. Beyond its southern boundary with Ephraim, Manasseh’s territory stretched outward to connect with other neighbors, creating shared borders [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To the north, Manasseh's land met the territory of the tribe of Asher. On the eastern side, their land touched the territory of Issachar, which was located near the Jordan River [מצודת דוד], following a boundary line that extended northward from the region of Michmethath [מלבי״ם].
