After a period of fear and isolation, the people of Shechem finally gather the courage to leave the safety of their city walls and return to working the land. This simple act of stepping out into the fields marks a critical turning point, setting the stage for an open rebellion. Up until this moment, the townspeople were too terrified of Abimelech to leave the city. It is only through the presence and support of Gaal and his brothers that they dare to venture into the open fields to harvest their vineyards, plucking the grapes from the vines [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. Once the harvest is gathered, they tread the grapes underfoot to produce wine [מצודת ציון].

The successful wine production sparks grand festivities. This celebration is characterized by joyous parties and merrymaking, echoing ancient terms associated with houses of celebration [רש״י, מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. Yet, the wine is not poured merely for ordinary joy; it serves a specific ritual purpose [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because the people of Shechem are idolaters, their lively celebrations naturally lead them into the temple of their local god [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There, within the walls of the pagan sanctuary, fueled by the eating, drinking, and festive atmosphere, their defiance reaches its peak as they openly curse Abimelech.
