Judges 9:42Sefaria

A false sense of security often proves more dangerous than the heat of battle. Following a day of intense conflict, a deceptive calm settles over the city of Shechem, prompting its residents to make a fatal miscalculation.

Leaving the protective walls of their city, the people of Shechem venture out into the open fields. Their intention is simply to return to their daily routines and agricultural work, specifically the grape harvest that is underway at the time [רש"י, מלבי"ם]. This sudden return to normalcy happens because the overall status of the conflict remains unclear [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The residents mistakenly assume that the enemy forces will not sustain a daily, continuous assault against them [אברבנאל]. Feeling that the immediate threat has passed, they abandon their defensive posture and confidently step out into the vulnerable countryside [מלבי"ם].

However, this unrestricted movement does not go unnoticed. Abimelech's men and other informants quickly observe the city's inhabitants scattering across the fields to work [רש"י, מצודת דוד]. They immediately report this development to Abimelech, alerting him that the people of Shechem have unknowingly stripped away their own defenses and left themselves completely exposed to a renewed attack.
