שופטים, פרק ט׳, פסוק ט׳

Judges 9:9Sefaria

When approached by the rest of the forest with an offer to rule over them, the olive tree firmly rejects the proposal. It already possesses a highly useful and important purpose in the world and has no desire to abandon its calling in exchange for authority. The tree questions whether it makes sense to stop producing its good fruit [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ] and its rich oil [רש״י, מצודת ציון].

This oil brings honor to both God and human beings in several profound ways. For God, the oil is used to light the lamps in the Tabernacle and the Temple [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ], and it serves as a central ingredient in the offerings brought upon the altar [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. For humanity, the oil is essential for anointing priests and kings to their high positions [מצודת דוד]. It also provides light for people's homes and serves as a rich, important ingredient in their daily food [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Given this great contribution and high status, the olive tree wonders why it should leave its place to sway over the other trees. Taking on such a role represents leaving a stable, productive life for one of roaming and exhausting toil [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Accepting the crown would mean abandoning meaningful personal work only to become enslaved to managing the endless needs of the public [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], which is the practical reality of becoming a king [רד״ק].

On a deeper, conceptual level, the olive tree symbolizes a person who is spiritually whole and truly happy. In this view, the richness of the oil represents the attainment of wisdom and the abundance of prophecy, while the honor refers to the presence of the spirit of God. A person who has reached such a high spiritual level has no desire for authority. Taking on leadership and dealing with the constant demands of the masses would force him to sacrifice his own spiritual perfection, effectively turning him into a servant of the people [מלבי״ם].
