Regarding the animals used in this ritual, the requirement for a living bird goes beyond the simple fact that it must be alive. It actually describes the essential nature and character of the creature. It must be a wild bird that lives out in nature, far from the city. It is specifically a free creature that refuses to accept human authority and remains completely undomesticated [מלבי״ם].

The exact location where the sprinkling takes place is a matter of different perspectives. One approach suggests that the ritual is performed on the lintel of the doorway, drawing a direct parallel to the smearing of blood on the doorposts during the Exodus from Egypt [מלבי״ם, אדרת אליהו]. Conversely, another view argues that the procedure is not meant to be focused on a single, specific point like the doorway.
