Leviticus 14:49Sefaria

The process of purifying a home that has recovered from a severe affliction requires a unique ceremony. This ritual formally ends the quarantine period and the physical treatment of the walls. To achieve this, the priest directs another person to gather specific items on his behalf, rather than collecting them himself The goal of this act is to completely purify the home [ביאור שטיינזלץ וביאור יש״ר], specifically removing the deep flaw and deficiency that had attached to the structure [רד צ הופמן].

The materials brought for the home are two birds, cedar wood, crimson yarn, and hyssop. These are exactly the same items used to purify a person recovering from a similar affliction The selection of these specific materials is a tradition handed down to Moses at Mount Sinai [בכור שור]. However, unlike a human who must later offer animal sacrifices, the atonement for a home concludes entirely with the bird ceremony, and no further sacrifices are required [רד צ הופמן].

Since an entire building cannot be immersed in a ritual bath to wash away its impurity, an alternative method is necessary. The birds symbolize that the corruption of the affliction was rooted in physical defects. By sprinkling the blood on the outer doorpost, a public demonstration is made showing that the disease has departed and the home is now entirely free of its flaw [רלב״ג].

This complex ritual raises an interesting question regarding its timing. A person whose affliction heals during the initial quarantine weeks does not bring a purification offering at all. Only a fully confirmed sufferer who was banished from the camp brings one. Why, then, does a home that heals as early as the second week require such an elaborate ceremony? The answer lies in the intense physical treatment of the building. The actions of removing infected stones, scraping the walls, and replastering are considered acts of absolute impurity. Therefore, once the house recovers from this invasive procedure, it demands a complete purification [יריעות שלמה].

It is important to note that the bird ceremony is only necessary in cases where the affliction either remained unchanged or spread, forcing the owners to remove stones and replaster the walls before the disease finally stopped. In contrast, if the spots faded or vanished completely after just the first week of quarantine, the home does not require the bird ceremony. In that milder scenario, merely scraping the surface of the affected area is enough to restore the home to purity
