Leviticus 14:12Sefaria

The purification process of a person recovering from a profound spiritual affliction reaches its climax in a unique ceremony, marking their return from social and spiritual isolation to the heart of the community. The focus of this ritual is the presentation of a live offering alongside oil, symbolizing the restoration of vitality and health to someone whose sins had distanced them from society. The priest begins by taking one of the two lambs brought for the ceremony [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This specific lamb is the most essential component of the purification, so much so that even an impoverished person is obligated to bring it [העמק דבר]. The requirement of this single lamb also indicates that, after the fact, absolute physical equality between the two animals is not strictly necessary [מלבי״ם].

The priest dedicates this lamb as a guilt offering. Typically, a guilt offering is brought for misappropriating sacred property. Commentators explain that this severe affliction comes as a punishment for malicious speech and arrogance, which are considered a trespass against God's honor. It is as if the arrogant person attempts to steal God's very garments [ספורנו]. Furthermore, the underlying concept of this guilt carries connotations of desolation and loss. The afflicted person was considered as though dead and desolate from the world, and this offering serves to protect him from that state of ruin [הכתב והקבלה]. The priest explicitly dedicates the lamb for this exact purpose to prevent any confusion with the burnt offering that is also brought during the ceremony [פרדס יוסף].

Rather than immediately sacrificing the animal on the altar, the primary approach among commentators is that the priest first brings the lamb into the Temple courtyard This entry serves as the necessary preparation for the waving ceremony The priest then takes the lamb together with a measure of oil, which represents health [רש״ר הירש], and waves them. It is emphasized that only the lamb and the oil are waved together, excluding the other offerings brought at this time This waving is highly unusual because it is performed while the animal is still alive, unlike most offerings where only specific parts are waved after slaughter The physical motion involves the priest moving the lamb and the oil back and forth, as well as up and down [רלב״ג], while some describe it as leading them around the altar [שד״ל]. Ideally, the animal and the oil are waved simultaneously, though the obligation is still met if the priest waves them separately The ritual dictates that this motion is performed only a single time, rather than repeatedly

How this waving was executed is a matter of discussion. One approach maintains that the priest performed it alone inside the sacred area, a space the purifying person was not yet permitted to enter. Conversely, another tradition suggests that the purifying individual and the priest held the items and waved them together while standing at the very edge of the courtyard The entire ritual takes place before God, specifically on the eastern side of the courtyard with the priest facing west This specific placement teaches that such a ceremony can only occur within the Temple, where the Divine Presence rests permanently, and never on private altars [תורה תמימה]. Through these physical actions, a profound spiritual reality unfolds. The individual, returning from a path of selfish mistakes, stands before the Temple and completely rededicates their personality, body, and resources to the service of God and the betterment of the community [רש״ר הירש].
