Malachi 2:8Sefaria

The prophet delivers a harsh rebuke to the priests of his time, drawing a sharp contrast between their corrupt behavior and the ideal legacy of the early priests, led by Aaron. Instead of serving as spiritual guides, these leaders failed completely, both in their personal lives and in their public duties.

This downfall occurred in three distinct stages. First, the priests abandoned the proper path expected of those who serve God, forsaking the noble legacy of their ancestors Their actions reflected a deliberate turning away and abandonment of their calling [מצודת ציון]. This initial departure was a deeply personal failure, representing a moral collapse within themselves [מלבי״ם].

This private corruption naturally led to public harm. The priests, whose primary responsibility was to teach the Torah [אבן עזרא], transformed into an obstacle for the nation [מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this behavior was the exact opposite of Aaron's historical example. Rather than guiding the masses away from wrongdoing, the priests caused the people to fail in their observance of the laws This public failure stemmed from a desire to cater to the masses. By showing favoritism, the priests refused to correct the people, remaining silent even when they brought stolen or flawed sacrifices

As a direct result of these personal and public sins, the priests completely shattered and nullified the ancient covenant made with the tribe of Levi [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This agreement was originally established so that the priests would serve and honor God [מצודת דוד], and it was built entirely on the dual foundations of personal integrity and public guidance [מלבי״ם]. Because the priests violated their end of the agreement, God nullified His end. Instead of blessing them with life and peace, God caused the priests to become despised and degraded in the eyes of the very people they tried to please. Ultimately, the public loses respect for leaders who show favoritism in the law and betray their sacred duties [אברבנאל].
