מלאכי, פרק ב׳, פסוק ד׳

Malachi 2:4Sefaria

God’s severe warnings to the priests and the people are not driven by a desire to punish, but rather by a deep intention to preserve an ancient and sacred relationship. The call to awareness carries a dual message. On one hand, it serves as a strict warning, urging the people to recognize the harsh consequences that will follow if they refuse to listen to God [אבן עזרא]. On the other hand, it is an invitation to understand the true motive behind the commandment to honor God, which was given specifically so that they might receive a good reward [מצודת דוד].

This directive is not meant solely for the religious leaders. It is equally directed at the Israelites, placing an obligation upon the entire nation to respect the priests, follow their guidance, and refrain from bringing blemished sacrifices [אבן עזרא]. The ultimate goal of these repeated commands and warnings is to sustain the covenant. God deeply desires that the special agreement He formed with the tribe of Levi, led by Aaron and his descendants, continues to endure throughout the generations [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Furthermore, this is not a newly invented requirement, but a fundamental, ancient duty. The original covenant granting the priesthood and Levitical duties was established on the strict condition that they protect God's honor [מלבי״ם]. Because this agreement was originally confirmed in public before all the Israelites through the miracle of the staffs in the Tabernacle, it is fitting that the entire nation takes part in upholding it. The current priests are called to look back to Aaron, the very first priest. He was granted a covenant of life and peace as a direct result of his deep reverence and the honor he showed to God, standing in sharp contrast to those who currently fail to respect His name [אברבנאל].
