Malachi 2:7Sefaria

The true calling of a priest extends far beyond the physical rituals of the Temple. He is meant to serve as a spiritual guide and a vital link connecting God and the people of Israel. When a priest walks on an upright path, his personal integrity directly influences the nation, inspiring and increasing the number of righteous individuals within it [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators is that this represents the ideal standard expected of every priest, calling them to continue the historical legacy of Aaron and Phinehas

To fulfill this role, the priest has a strict duty to oversee, practice, and protect the knowledge of God and His Commandments By safeguarding this spiritual wisdom, he is equipped to teach the people the proper way to live [מצודת דוד]. Historically, the authority to teach was entrusted to the tribe of Levi, making it both natural and proper for the Israelites to turn to the priest for instruction

The wisdom the priest imparts can be divided into two distinct categories. First, there is knowledge that the priest has independently researched and deduced through his own intellect and clear reasoning, which he then openly shares. Second, there is the formal tradition passed down from generation to generation, which the people actively seek to receive directly from him [מלבי״ם].

In this capacity, the priest acts as a messenger There are two main ways to understand the nature of this mission. One perspective highlights his role as a mediator between God and Israel, tasked with storing the teachings in his heart and communicating God's words to the nation Another approach takes this imagery further, comparing the priest to actual ministering angels. Just as angels serve before God, the priest serves God by entering the innermost, sacred spaces of the Temple, places where ordinary people are not permitted to go

However, this elevated status carries a heavy burden of responsibility. For the people to learn from him, the priest must be truly fitting for the role. Only if a priest's actions genuinely resemble those of a heavenly messenger is it appropriate to seek spiritual instruction from him. If his behavior falls short of this high standard, the people should not look to him for guidance [אברבנאל].
