מיכה, פרק ג׳, פסוק ד׳

Micah 3:4Sefaria

אָ֚ז יִזְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א יַעֲנֶ֖ה אוֹתָ֑ם וְיַסְתֵּ֨ר פָּנָ֤יו מֵהֶם֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔יא כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵרֵ֖עוּ מַעַלְלֵיהֶֽם׃ {פ}

A time of sudden crisis forces corrupt leaders to face a terrifying reality: absolute divine silence. Those in power who once exploited their positions to crush the weak [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ] will eventually find themselves entirely helpless when their fortunes reverse. This moment of reckoning arrives either when foreign enemies finally attack [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל] or as the natural continuation of the dark period the prophet warned about previously [רש״י].

In the midst of this disaster, these leaders will desperately cry out to God, begging Him to save them and restore their peace [רש״י]. However, their pleas will be met with silence, as God will simply not answer them [מצודת ציון]. Instead, He will hide His face, refusing to look upon their suffering [מצודת דוד]. By removing His divine protection, He will abandon them entirely to the random cruelties of chance [מלבי״ם].

The commentators agree that this severe punishment operates on a strict principle of measure for measure, serving as a direct response to their own wicked actions [מצודת ציון]. In the past, these leaders plugged their ears to the desperate cries of the poor and turned their faces away from the suffering of the oppressed to avoid helping them. Therefore, God will treat them in the exact same manner when they are overpowered by their enemies. This profound divine silence is not a display of arbitrary cruelty, but a reflection of perfect justice. The disaster that ultimately consumes these leaders is nothing more than the direct consequence of their own choices and the very reality they built with their own hands [מלבי״ם].
