מיכה, פרק ז׳, פסוק ז׳

Micah 7:7Sefaria

Following dark prophecies of doom and the moral decay of an entire generation, a sudden turning point of comfort emerges. The speaker makes a powerful declaration: despite the harsh reality and the complete lack of short-term hope, absolute trust remains anchored in the promises of God. There are different perspectives on who exactly is expressing this trust. Some view this as the prophet speaking directly for himself [רש״י]. Others explain that the prophet is actually voicing the thoughts of the Israelites suffering in exile, or perhaps capturing the mindset of the few wise individuals living in that troubled time [רד״ק, אבן עזרא].

The repeated themes of waiting and anticipation express a profound hope for future salvation [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that this repetition serves as a poetic tool to reinforce a vital message. It teaches that even from the darkest depths of exile and hardship, a person must continue to hope in God, holding onto the absolute certainty that He will listen to their cry [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

Beyond poetic emphasis, a deeper conceptual layer reveals two distinct forms of redemption. The initial focus on waiting for God's salvation refers to the final redemption promised at the end of days. This future salvation is guaranteed to arrive at its designated time, just as surely as the morning sun rises to end the night. In contrast, the accompanying confidence that God will actively hear their plea points to the possibility of an even earlier redemption. It represents the profound hope that if the nation repents and cries out to God, He will hear their prayers at a favorable moment, bringing salvation forward long before its originally scheduled time [מלבי״ם].
