The breakdown of a society reaches its most tragic extreme when the natural, unbreakable bonds of family love completely fall apart. This total collapse of civil and social peace points to a deep moral corruption, where reality is turned completely upside down [מלבי״ם]. Instead of the proper order where children naturally respect their parents, the most basic relationships become toxic [רד״ק].
In this fractured reality, a son takes the active role [אבן עזרא], speaking shameful and hateful words against his own father [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Similarly, a daughter rises against her mother with insults and curses. A stricter interpretation suggests the daughter actually stands up to give false testimony against her mother [מלבי״ם]. This bitter division spreads beyond blood relatives to in-laws, as a daughter-in-law turns against her husband's mother [מצודת ציון]. The evil of the generation is so intense that even a new bride, still standing under her wedding canopy, hurls insults at her mother-in-law during a time when she should normally be showing love and kissing her hands [אברבנאל]. Ultimately, a person finds no safe haven, as even the servants and other members living within the household turn into enemies [אברבנאל, מצודת דוד].
Beyond the literal family conflict, there is a deeper, symbolic layer describing the relationship between humanity, the soul, and God [אברבנאל]. In this view, God is the Father, and the Israelites are the children who rebel and shame Him instead of offering respect. The human soul is represented by the daughter and the bride, who sin and rise up against the mother and mother-in-law. These maternal figures represent the Torah, which guides and raises the soul, as well as the entire community of Israel.
The household members who become enemies carry two profound meanings in this symbolic approach. They represent either a person's own body parts, which become enemies of God when they are used to commit sins, or they point to the tribe of Judah. Although the people of Judah sit in God's Temple in Jerusalem and are considered the members of His household, they fail to love and serve Him, ultimately revealing themselves as His enemies.
