נחמיה, פרק א׳, פסוק ה׳

A heartfelt prayer often begins by acknowledging the greatness of God and the deep historical bond He shares with His people. Nehemiah opens his emotional plea by using grand titles and recalling this historic covenant, setting the stage to ask for mercy on behalf of the Israelites. His introduction is a pure expression of begging and pleading [רש"י, מצודת ציון].

Addressing God directly, Nehemiah calls Him great and awesome, an approach that closely mirrors the way Daniel opened his own prayer [מלבי"ם]. Yet, among these praises, the title of mighty is noticeably missing. This omission reflects the harsh reality of the era. Nehemiah looked out and saw the Israelites suffering in chains and captivity, and the Temple lying in ruins. Because of this tragedy, he refrained from speaking of God's might at a time when that power was not openly visible in the world [ר' סעדיה גאון].

Continuing his plea, Nehemiah appeals to God as the keeper of the covenant. This highlights a deep trust that God guards His agreements and will ultimately deliver the good rewards He promised to His people [מצודת דוד].
