When their names are combined with other lists of Levites recorded elsewhere, the total number of watch leaders reaches either twenty-two, matching the number of priestly leaders, or twenty-four [מלבי״ם].

The primary responsibility of these leaders revolved around expressing gratitude and praise to God. The primary approach among commentators is that these men were appointed specifically to direct and conduct the choirs of thanksgiving [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד], or perhaps they were in charge of the thanksgiving psalms themselves [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead, based on the traditional reading marks that separate the text, it is actually the proper name of another individual Levite [מלבי״ם].
