The appearance of so many consecutive generations presents a historical puzzle. According to traditional calculations, the Persian period, stretching from the rebuilding of the Temple to the arrival of Alexander the Great, lasted only thirty-four years. This raises a natural question regarding how so many generations could be born and serve in such a brief window of time. The explanation is that these generations did not stretch out over a long era, but rather lived concurrently. Joshua likely returned from exile as an older man whose descendants were already alive.
