הַלְוִיִּם֩ בִּימֵ֨י אֶלְיָשִׁ֜יב יוֹיָדָ֤ע וְיוֹחָנָן֙ וְיַדּ֔וּעַ כְּתוּבִ֖ים רָאשֵׁ֣י אָב֑וֹת וְהַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים עַל־מַלְכ֖וּת דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ הַפָּֽרְסִֽי׃ {פ}

The historical records of Temple leadership transition from the initial waves of returnees to Israel into a later, more established era. The documentation traces the continuous dynasty of Levites and priests across several generations of High Priests: Eliashib, his son Joiada, his son Johanan (who was also known by a second name, Jonathan), and his son Jaddua [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד].

The specific attention given to the Levites during the time of Eliashib stems from a unique demographic shift. In the periods prior to Eliashib, the heads of the Levite families remained unchanged because the majority of the Levites only arrived in Israel much later, alongside Ezra. Consequently, it was only during Eliashib's generation that the leadership of the Levite families began to transition [מלבי״ם]. These men then took on the crucial roles of leading the ancestral houses during the various Temple watches [רש״י].

To preserve this lineage, the names of these leading Levites and priests were inscribed in an official genealogical record. There are different perspectives regarding the fate of this document. Some maintain that a dedicated book was compiled during that era but was ultimately lost to history and is no longer in our possession [רלב״ג]. Others suggest that the mention of this record simply indicates that their names are detailed in another location [מלבי״ם].

This entire process of registration occurred during the reign of Darius the Persian. The primary approach among commentators is that the mention of the king serves as a historical marker, defining the extensive period that stretched from Eliashib to Jaddua. However, a contrasting view understands the king's involvement as an exercise of direct governmental authority rather than just a timeline. According to this perspective, King Darius personally ordered the appointment of these family heads, placing them in power even if they were not necessarily worthy of such an elevated status [מצודת דוד].
