Nehemiah 12:47Sefaria

וְכׇל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ בִּימֵ֨י זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל וּבִימֵ֣י נְחֶמְיָ֗ה נֹ֥תְנִ֛ים מְנָי֛וֹת הַמְשֹׁרְרִ֥ים וְהַשֹּׁעֲרִ֖ים דְּבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֑וֹ וּמַקְדִּשִׁים֙ לַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְהַ֨לְוִיִּ֔ם מַקְדִּשִׁ֖ים לִבְנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹֽן׃ {פ}

Maintaining the spiritual operations of the Temple required a highly organized economic support system. During the eras of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, the entire nation took responsibility for supplying the needs of the Temple singers and gatekeepers, ensuring their sacred duties continued without interruption. The people provided specific portions and gifts to these servants on a strict daily schedule. This support arrived exactly on time, without any delay, providing steady and reliable sustenance for those dedicated to the Temple service [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד].

Beyond the daily provisions, a carefully structured chain of tithing was established. The Israelites would set aside a tenth of their harvest for the Levites, who would then separate a tenth of that received portion to give to the priests, the descendants of Aaron. This period also marked a significant organizational shift in how these agricultural gifts were collected. Previously, Levites had to travel out to the threshing floors in the fields to gather their portions themselves. Under the new system, the Israelites were required to bring their tithes directly to appointed officials at the Temple. These officials then distributed the food to the Levites who were actively serving. In turn, the Levites prepared the specific portion meant for the priests and delivered it directly to their designated chambers within the Temple complex [רלב״ג, מלבי״ם].
