נחמיה, פרק ד׳, פסוק י״א

Nehemiah 4:11Sefaria

Rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem was a monumental task carried out under the constant shadow of enemy attacks. This tense environment forced the workers to merge grueling physical labor with immediate military readiness. Both the builders constructing the wall and the porters carrying the materials found themselves in the exact same dangerous situation, operating with the same level of high alert [מלבי״ם].

To manage the heavy construction materials, the workers utilized specific tools to carry their burdens. Some suggest they used a small pad placed on the shoulder to ease the strain of the heavy loads [רלב״ג], while others explain they used a specialized basket designed specifically for porters [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The reality of the constant threat dictated a highly complex method of working. Every laborer had to work with only one hand, keeping their other hand firmly gripped on a weapon at all times. Because one hand was permanently occupied, a worker was physically unable to lift heavy materials onto his own shoulder. To overcome this limitation, they relied entirely on teamwork, with each worker needing a companion to lift and position the load onto his shoulder for him [מלבי״ם].

As for the weapon kept constantly at the ready, commentators agree it was a tool of combat. The primary approach among commentators is that this was specifically a sword intended to strike down enemies in the event of a sudden attack, though some understand it more broadly as any type of military weapon [רש״י].
