Divine kindness and constant care accompanied the Israelites throughout their journey in the desert, even during moments when their behavior was far from worthy. Although the actions of the Israelites often justified complete abandonment [מצודת דוד], and they did face punishment for their mistakes, God never left them behind. This relationship is compared to raising small children: a parent may discipline a child for their wrongdoing, but they will never abandon them [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This unwavering care was clearly visible in the constant presence of the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire, which continued to travel with the nation without interruption. These pillars served a dual purpose. On a practical level, they provided essential benefits, such as lighting up the darkness and directing the physical journey. At the same time, they fulfilled a deep spiritual role, meant to straighten the hearts of the people and guide them toward a stronger faith in God [רלב״ג].
