Nehemiah 9:30Sefaria

God shows immense patience toward the people, granting them numerous opportunities to repent. Yet, faced with constant warnings, the people choose to remain stubborn, leading to the inevitable loss of divine protection and their surrender to foreign rule.

The primary approach among commentators is that God deliberately waited and extended the time before bringing any punishment. Some explain that God extended His kindness and mercy over the people to avoid destroying them Others emphasize that this waiting period was an actual extension of years, given in the hope that the people might use the extra time to turn away from their evil paths

During this extended grace period, God did not remain silent but actively warned the nation. He communicated through the spirit of prophecy [מצודת דוד]. This divine spirit was entrusted so deeply to the messengers that it was as if it had been placed directly into their hands and under their authority [אבן עזרא]. From a historical perspective, these warnings were delivered by the prophets who operated from the days of Uzziah, king of Judah, and onward, constantly cautioning the people about the approaching exile [מלבי״ם].

Despite these persistent efforts, the people refused to listen [מצודת דוד] and rejected the moral lessons embedded in God's messages [רלב״ג]. Consequently, they faced a harsh reality: God handed them over to the control of foreign nations [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This unfolded as a tragic historical process, beginning with the exile of the Ten Tribes by Assyria and concluding with the exile of Judah and Benjamin by Babylon [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the kings of these foreign empires inflicted massive destruction and death upon the Israelites [רלב״ג].
