A new generation of Israelites finally steps into the land to claim their inheritance. Yet, the monumental task of conquering the territory is not accomplished through their own strength; it is achieved through the direct guidance and assistance of God. The primary approach among commentators is that He is the one who actively subdues the local inhabitants, breaking their power and ensuring the Israelites' success.
The process of taking over the land unfolds in distinct ways, reflecting the different reactions of the native nations [מלבי״ם]. Certain Canaanite groups choose not to engage in battle. They either submit on their own or walk away entirely. For instance, the Girgashites abandon their territory and leave, while the Hivites decide to make peace and willingly surrender.
Conversely, many other nations decide to resist and wage war. In these instances of armed conflict, God completely hands over these defiant groups, along with their kings and populations, into the power of the Israelites. Through combat, the Israelites are able to defeat them entirely, wiping them from the land and doing with them exactly as they please.
